Four years after negotiations on its company deal began, aviation services giant Swissport still has no approved deal after the Fair Work Commission found for the second time that its proposal did not pass the “Better Off overall Overall Test”. “Aviation standards must be repealed and this agreement will only pull them down. Low wages, underemployment and exhausting rosters push airport workers into poverty and threaten security. Airports and airlines must shoulder their responsibilities to reduce the exploitation of workers in their supply chains. The federal government needs to start holding airports and airlines to account and create good, secure airport jobs,” he added. The deal was initially approved by more than 91% of Swissport employees after more than 80 direct consultations at 25 airports across the country, but was delayed by trade union opposition. Swissport, which before the pandemic employed thousands of workers at airports across Australia who did everything from passenger check-in to plane loading, said its deal was supported by 91% of employees who voted and many workers improved thousands of dollars. In some companies, there are so-called company agreements to offer employees a better offer and better working conditions than they would under the existing rules. They are often negotiated between unions, companies and employees. “Ironically, the deal, called CA18, provided millions of dollars in additional payment and would have seen the average Swissport worker up to $6,800 better per year than the price of the industry and, in many cases, workers would have been better off by more than $15,000,” Swissport said in a statement. The TWU is appealing the approval of a new company agreement to the groundhandling company swissport, which last year decided by the Fair Work Commission to underpay its workers forced to sleep at airports.

Qantas announced yesterday that it was subcontracting about 1,000 of the 2,500 Qantas workers the company stretched and subcontracted to Swissport, which has ties to the Chinese government. Swissport is desperately trying to enter into a company agreement that exploits workers to keep costs low so that it can meet the requirements of the Qantas contract. . . .
